Out the back of a well lived in home in Melbourne’s North, Nina Roberts creates her handmade ceramic vessels. The backyard studio is filled with glazes, tools, clay, experiments and a kiln, nestled next to home grown vegetables and unassuming chooks.
Nina has a calm manner, reflected in the warmth of her work. Forms are organic and alluring, they give the sense that they are longing to be held and used. Her glazes are often soft and opaque giving her finished work a lovely subtlety and tactility.
Her stick window series was inspired by the Australian bush and the dappled light that filters through the trees. It is created using engraving and an oxide prior to the first firing, which allows for a unique finish on every vase once they have gone through the process of glazing and a second firing.
