Caran D’Ache has been devoted to the art of drawing and writing for over 100 years. They are today the only remaining manufacturer of writing instruments out of Switzerland, making their ‘Swiss Made’ quality label more desirable than ever. Since it’s inception in 1915, Caran D’Ache has been located in Geneva based factories where they continue to devote themselves to continuous innovation and improvement, rigorous high standards and environmentally sound practices.
Named after Russian-born, French illustrator, Emmanuel Poiré, who used the pseudonym Caran D’Ache for his prolific and innovative work in the 19th Century. Caran D’Ache originally came from the Russian word karandash (карандаш), meaning pencil, which in turn comes from the Turkish words kara taş, meaning black stone – also known as Graphite.
